Can't open raw (.cr2) in Photoshop

Non-aviation photos, camera equipment and photography in general.

I get "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."

So, after reading several forum threads from all over the place, I downloaded the latest version of the Camera Raw plugin. Naturally, being Adobe software, it wouldn't install without downloading another 30MB of shite in the form of Adobe Application Manager 2.0. Which now says that the original download is "not applicable". {banghead}

This is Photoshop CS, Version 8.0 (Educational Version if it makes any difference). The Camera Raw plugin currently installed is Version 2.0. What do I actually need to do? {boggled} Thanks!

Get a more recent Photoshop version, I'm afraid. One of the methods Adobe uses to make you buy the latest version is to not support RAW formats of newer cameras in older versions of ACR. Of course, it would easily possible for Adobe to add them via an update, but as I said - they want you to buy the latest version.

Alternatively, you can convert the RAW files with Digital Photo Professional, that's Canon's in-house software. It's not bad at all, but of course doesn't blend in as nicely with Photoshop as ACR does.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. {boggled}

I haven't been able to find a link to DPP anywhere, but Canon's website is a disaster. I can find plenty of "upgrade an existing install" but not the original. Any pointers? Or alternatives?

I tried online-convert.com, which certainly does convert cr2 to JPEG or TIFF quite happily. But the lovely deep red of Norwegian comes out distinctly orange. Is that a normal part of the conversion process?

Try going to the updater, maybe there is a newer version of the Adobe Camera Raw. But I wouldn't hold my breath, that is Adobe's way of getting you to buy the latest version of their product.

Yep, can't update ACR.

I don't edit hundreds of shots and can handle a two-stage process, so I decided to do the Digital Photo Professional thing. I could only find updaters on Canon's webshite, but this guy had a link to an actual download: http://www.cdifoto.com/dpp.php

That was version 1.0.0.5, which still wouldn't open the files from my camera. But now it was installed, I could run the upgrader found here: http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0029161.asp - and now I have 3.4.1.1, which will open my photos.

Haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but it looks like it does the job.

DPP is not bad at all. It is strange, though, that Canon indeed does not distribute it (as well as the EOS Utility program) via internet. When the CD of my old 400D broke down, I could not install these programs anymore. WTF? Without a Canon camera, these progs are pretty useless anyway, so why don't they offer them for download?

As for updating ACR - Adobe almost never adds support for additional file types via updates. I know many photographers - myself included - who are pretty annoyed with that product policy. In theory, this means that whenever you spend a couple hundred bucks on a new camera, you would have to spend the same amount on a new PS version as well. For the money Adobe asks for PS, I would expect more customer-mindedness.

Bastards ensure their product is bought...

FTFY

It really is annoying. As is Canon's retarded policy of not offering a download, only an updater for an existing install. What's wrong with offering it but making you enter a camera serial number or something? And yet, if I download v1 from some random site somewhere they'll quite happily let me upgrade it to v3.4.
